About the role:
As Royal Mail enters a new era as a private company, the importance of effectively understanding and influencing public policy has never been greater. The public policy team sits at the heart of the company and is responsible for driving the Group’s Whitehall and EU agendas by proactively managing the company’s interaction with the UK government, the European Union institutions, quangos and a range of other opinion-formers. The team also ensures that the business takes account of its various public policy commitments, and maximises its positive contribution to policy debates wherever possible. Issues cut across all aspects of the business, including postal policy, employment, tax, security, data and technology.
Reporting to the Head of UK and EU Public Policy, you will work closely with colleagues in the public affairs, regulation, and strategy teams on a daily basis as well as colleagues across all parts and levels of the business on specific issues.
Key areas of the role include:
• Manage aspects of Royal Mail’s day-to-day engagement with Whitehall, the EU institutions, trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups, quangos, and other third party organisations that influence public policy relevant to Royal Mail Group
• Represent Royal Mail’s interests and services to policy-makers by responding to consultations, meeting with officials, and inputting to policy-making processes where possible
• Work flexibly across different and at times unexpected areas of regulation and policy which affect Royal Mail, with an ability and willingness to understand detail
About You:
With a background in government, a regulatory body, or in the public policy function of a company or organisation, you will have a strong track record of writing, proofing and editing material. With practical knowledge of policy and legislative processes in the UK, you will be an analytical thinker with the ability to ‘work through’ issues and develop responses. A self-starter with good intuition and an ability to identify potential opportunities for delivering value in the public policy arena, your excellent communications skills will allow you to effectively engage stakeholders at all levels of the organisation and confidently present data and arguments.
PLEASE NOTE - This role may involve occasional travel to continental Europe.
